Michal Modai, nee Solomon, a seventh generation "sabra", was born in Jerusalem to one of Israel's oldest families. Mr Yoel Moshe Solomon, an ancestor of hers, was one of the founders of Petach Tikva in the 19th century.

Michal was married to the late Yitzhak Modai, a former Minister of Finance, and she has a son, daughter and seven grandchildren.

Michal concluded the Evelina de Rothschild School, Jerusalem and continued her studies at the David Yellin Teachers' Training College, Jerusalem. After finishing her studies, she worked as a kindergarten teacher at an immigrant camp near Zichron Yaacov. This was her first encounter with the distress of the new immigrants where she saw the need for the veteran society of Israel to give a helping hand to these newcomers.
1968 - 1974 Elected Chairperson of the Herzliah-Pituach WIZO branch, and concentrated the majority of her activities giving assistance to the residents of NEVE ISRAEL, an underprivileged suburb of Herzliah, which is mainly populated by new immigrants.
1974 - 1979 Deputy Chairperson of WIZO Israel. Amongst many other activities, she headed a campaign which succeeded in enlisting some 10,000 women, of all ages and from different social back-grounds into the Israeli Defence Forces in an annual voluntary service of a few weeks.
1979 - 1984 Chairperson of WIZO Israel. Initiated the establishment of WIZO's first shelter for Battered women opened in 1983. Served as WIZO's representative on the National Council of Women's Organisations as well as on other various national committees.
1980 - 1984 Whilst still Chairperson of WIZO Israel, also served as Vice- Chairperson of the World WIZO Executive.
1984 - 1996 Elected Chairperson of World WIZO Executive.
1992 - 1996 Served as Vice President of World WIZO
Jan. 1996 Elected President World WIZO. Represents WIZO in International Events, and carries out missions to WIZO Federations around the world.
1999 - 2000 was presented with the Prime Minister's Shield of Voluntarism
Jan. 2000 Re-elected President of World WIZO at the 22nd World WIZO Conference
1984 - 1996

Member of the Presidium of the Zionist General Council, Member of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency.
1997 Appointed member of the Executive of the World Zionist Organisation at the 33rd Congress
1998 Appointed Co-chairman of the Planning Committee of the Assembly
  Honorary President of the Israel-France Friendship Society.
