      The Sherut La'am Program is a unique volunteer and educational experience that allows participants to explore their field of interest through work experience, seminars and an ending project run by the volunteers.
      Criteria
      This Sherut La'am program is designed for young adults ages 18-30 who have studied at least one year in an institute of higher education. Participants must have a basic knowledge of Hebrew (level Aleph) and are required to present a recommendation either from their Ulpan, or their Shaliach. The program runs for a period of six months although there is a possibility to prolong this period by payment of the employer.

      Other details:

      • The program runs twice a year: January and June.
      • Participants must present medical forms to insure of proper health.
      • Applications must be filled out by Shlichim and by Tnuat Aliyah in Israel.
      • Participants of the program receive a stipend from Tnuat Aliyah.
      • Medical insurance should be arranged in advance by each participant (an option is available to pay through the Jewish Agency).
      • Price: $200 for the program & additional fees for tours & seminars.

      There are five tracks in Sherut La'am:

      1. Education/Social Work:
        In this track volunteers are placed in schools teaching English, in schools for special education, in centers for new immigrants, and in development towns.

        Educational seminars include: "Introduction to Israel", and "Teaching English".

      2. Women's Issues:
        In this track volunteers are placed in various women's organizations such as "Na'amat", "Wizo", and others. In these organizations volunteers do PR work, research and more. There is also an option of working in a shelter for battered women.

        Educational seminars include: "Introduction to Israel", and "Women’s Rights in Israel Today".

      3. Arab Israeli Conflict:
        Volunteers are placed in various organizations that work to create a dialogue between Arabs and Jews and research different areas of the Arab-Israeli Conflict. Job options include working in a joint Arab-Israeli theatre project, working for human rights in the territories, and researching the peace process.

        Educational seminars include: "Introduction to Israel", and "the Peace Process".

      4. Progressive Judaism:
        Volunteers are placed in various organizations that support religious pluralism, such as the Israel Religious Action Center and the Reform and Conservative Movements.

      5. Environmental Issues:
        Volunteers are placed in various environmental organizations such as the JNF, the Ben Gurion Center for Desert Research and more. In these organizations volunteers work doing research, leading groups, and doing field work.

      Educational Enrichment program:
      Seminars: Zionism, Jewish Identity, Judaism, Israeli Society,
      Politics and Economy, Army
      Trips around Aretz Israel including the North, South and Jerusalem
      Social activities
      Host families
      Leadership training
