Introduction – New Youth Futures Localities
Dear Youth Futures Friends,
The November “events” (BOG, GA, Lions of Judah, Hadassah, Assembly & some 130 visits by friends and supporters) are behind us, and it is that time again for a Youth Futures program newsletter. This edition focuses on the new Youth Futures localities that have begun operating a few months ago, and are joining the rest of the localities to reach a total of 31 Youth Futures centers of impact nationwide.
I must admit that before I got to know the Youth Futures program, I was unsure of the definition of the words “at-risk” and “empowerment”. After meeting with children and Trustees (mentors), I realized these children are “at-risk of losing their place in society”, which means that they have a variety of challenges to overcome – extreme difficulties in school or at home, behavioral issues, poverty, and more. These children have had their lives predestined according to a script written even before they are born. Their Trustees’ job is to give them tools to rewrite their own lives – which is exactly the meaning of “empowerment”.
The Ben Gurion University is the evaluator of the program, and has stated in its latest evaluation report that the program’s strengths are its positioning as a key program in the localities, the high level of satisfaction of the participants and their parents and teachers, and the strong impact the program had on them. There is always room for improvement, and we are working hard to get additional partners on board. The Ministry of Education and the National Insurance Institute have both committed to the program, and we are being approached from all sectors for cooperation, which demonstrates the position that the program has earned in its field – thanks to the Youth Futures professional staff and your support.
I am looking forward to working with those of you that I’ve yet to meet, and to presenting the wonderful programs that our division operates – from Youth Futures to the Youth Aliyah villages and the excellence programs – all working hard to make a meaningful change in our youth’s futures.
On behalf of the Youth Futures Division and myself, thank you for being a part of this change.
