The Government Decided to Adopt the Jewish Agency's
Recommendation to Equate Aid to Uruguayan Immigrants with That of
Immigrants from Argentina
Jewish Agency Chairman Sallai Meridor Personally Informed
the Uruguayan Jewish Community of the Decision
Following a Jewish Agency request, the Government of Israel
decided to equate the assistance given immigrants from Uruguay with that given
to immigrants from Argentina.
Uruguay, bordering on Argentina and Brazil, is currently
suffering from an economic crisis.
The Jewish community, which numbers ca. 20,000 individuals,
mostly concentrated in the capital Montevideo, is known for its strong Zionist
sentiment and for its support of Israel.
Jewish Agency Chairman Sallai Meridor, who is currently
visiting Uruguay in order to strengthen ties with the Jewish community and to
promote Aliyah, said that it was his pleasant duty to personally inform the
Uruguayan Jewish community of the Israel Government decision.
